The project

The Akron Park Board Trail Committee is excited to announce a new effort to raise funds for a paved walking/biking trail.  Community surveys and feedback sessions identified a paved trail system as one of the top five projects requested by residents of Akron and the surrounding rural area.

The project goal is to improve quality of life, overall community health and attract visitors to Akron with a paved walking and biking trail system.  The system will improve access to key community resources and will expand access to nature and outdoor activities for people and families of all ages and abilities.

While the current trail system in Dunham Prairie and near the Big Sioux River has served the community for many years, a paved trail would expand access to bike riders, parents with strollers, wheel chairs, etc.  The proposed trail system would connect all neighborhoods to the school, park, and swimming pool and provide safe crossings of Hwy 3 and Hwy 12.

Our vision is to pave roughly 6 ½ miles through and around town.  The project will be phased over multiple years and will be completed as funding allows.  At this point in our development, we would like to establish an on-going broad base of business and community financial support.  We invite you to be part of this effort!
